Le projet transdisciplinaire MOBYDICK prend appui sur une actualisation du roman archétypal de Melville, Moby-Dick ou le cachalot, et consiste à repérer les conditions actuelles d’une écologie de la création, soit d’une écopoïétique, basée sur des dispositifs artistiques durables, allégés, frugaux et mobiles. Il s’organise autour d’une structure collaborative composée d’artistes et de chercheurs en arts, esthétique, linguistique, traductologie, droit et biologie. Le roman permet de construire un modèle structurel atemporel, d’y délimiter un microcosme de vie des œuvres pour observer et tester, à partir d’expériences de terrain, comment s’organisent les individus et les objets formels et conceptuels dans un cadre environnemental précarisé. Cette réécriture-recherche, rythmée par trois phases (Cartographier Moby-Dick, Expérimenter Moby-Dick et Réécrire Moby-Dick), permettra d’établir une taxinomie de ces nouveaux objets situés entre œuvre et objet de recherche (objet libre), en même temps qu’elle remodèle la figure originale de l’artiste-chercheur-aventurier-voyageur.

MOBYDICK is an interdisciplinary project rooted in a reworking of Melville’s archetypal novel
Moby-Dick ; or, the Whale and aiming to identify the conditions underpinning the ecology of creative processes today ; in other words, ecopoïesis based on artistic devices that are at once sustainable, alleviated, frugal and mobile. The project’s collaborative framework involves artists and researchers in the field of the arts, linguistics, translatology, law and biology. The novel offers an atemporal structural model within which a microcosm of the artwork’s existence may be defined, enabling us to observe and appraise in the field how individuals or formal and conceptual objects take shape within precarious environmental contexts. This approach to research through rewriting, carried out in three successive phases (Mapping Moby-Dick, Experimenting with Moby-Dick and Rewriting Moby-Dick), will enable us to establish a taxonomy of the new objects identified, at once artworks and objects of research (free objects), while also remodelling the originary figure of the artist-researcher-adventurer-traveller.

ANNÉE 1: CARTOGRAPHIER MOBY-DICK (2017-2018)

L’étude du milieu melvillien a débuté en mai 2017 par une lecture (inédite) performative ininterrompue de Moby-Dick pendant 32h et 16 min prolongée par un long travail pratique et analytique des 135 chapitres du roman.

ANNÉE 2: EXPÉRIMENTER MOBY-DICK (2018-2020)

La deuxième phase développe une étude de terrain sur les traces de Melville (France, Chili, États-Unis, Pacifique).

ANNÉE 3: RÉÉCRIRE MOBY-DICK (2021-2022)

La troisième phase permettra de traiter l’ensemble des données acquises et de poursuivre les collaborations avec les différents experts (artistes, biologistes, philosophes, romanciers, etc.) pour réécrire Moby-Dick.
